I dunno I am thinking about setting up a telnet BBS over the weekend. I have most of it done I just need to clean up some shit and do some bad ANSI art/menus. (God I suck at ANSI) Yay. Or I could just be a slacker and play more Age of Warhammer. Hrm. So many decisions.

Sir, we live in 2008, not in the 1980s.

BBSs were pretty popular up until the mid '90s!

The BBS days were badass, but they are sadly over.

You would be surprised how many are still up. I should have mine clean enough to let people sign after this weekend. I already have LORD, TW2002, Usurper, and a few other door games up and fully registered. TW2002 is set up to play 25 nodes simultaneously with unlimited turns so it should play more like a real multiplayer game rather than the slow ass 1 player at a time shit with limited turns.

I am going to strip down a lot of the bullshit on the boards that will never get used like the files section and some of the more complex messaging. The best thing is the BBS software I am running has a built in web interface including a java telnet client (which isn't all that spiffy as it fucks up some ANSI colors) so you can play at work even if you don't have a telnet client available.

If I can maintain enough interest to keep it up through the next month I will probably put up a Valhalla MUD (DIKU II) server that you can access through the BBS. I have never fucked with the software so I am not sure how detailed the base game is but if I get that far I will look for people to create areas.

My biggest annoyance at present is the fact that I have to pick up the scripting language (baja) that controls all of the the menu systems etc. It's fairly simple I have already set up one alternate command shell I just need to spend the time to redo all of the menus and come up with a fairly common command set. A lot of what the board is capable of is useless in this day and age. Like why bother with a file section when the board comes with a built in FTP server that you can use instead etc.

I think I will probably pass on Warhammer's preview weekend/open beta to most of this done. I also don't want to get uber burned out on warhammer pre-release. I think AoC would have lasted a bit longer if I hadn't played it so much beforehand.

I will probably have to go find someone on IRC who still does that shit. I have no artistic ability whatsoever. Throw in the fact that I have to use blocks the size of a small ethiopian child to do the art and there is no chance for anything but fail.

I was about to say, it reminded me of IRC. Mainly just making the channel title all cute and neat
