QUOTE (The Epic Sandbox @ Jun 25 2010, 07:30 AM)
In a feature earlier this month we talked about how the payment models of MMO’s have changed over the years. One of the games that is offering a model to pay by the month or by the hour is APB. While we questioned its payment model since it isn’t a true persistent game like UO, EQ, and WoW I held off my feelings on this game until now. We recently found out that APB is going to hit you up with in game ads when ever you zone into a new district or for every 3 hours played in 1 district.

Glad I wasn't at all interested in playing this one to begin with! I'm all for in game advertising, but not like this.

Anarchy Online has been doin this for a while, except more permanent (they're always there on the same billboard).

I don't mind simple billboards if they fit the setting, and I've always wanted to see real soda machines in games instead of generic ones so stuff like that is cool. This seems to go beyond that.

Lol gatorade and pizzahut billboards in anarchy online fits the setting? I mean maybe but come on, theres aliens and shit, crazy plasma guns probably, and gatorade fits into that?

This isn't that new guys and theres no reason to say the sky is falling. AO does it because the original game is 100% free. APB is doing it because its a shitty game that acted like it was going to be a cool MMO and turned out to be a diablo 2 counter strike pos, they're doing this because they have to if they want to try and survive.

Plus, that doesnt even sound that bad. I don't know what districts are like but I'm assuming they are separated by level (if levels exist), so youre either going to see them once every 3 hours or a few times more because you're running around or something. Big whoop, what bothers me more than this is games that have a minute long advertisement for every company involved in making the game that you cant escape or click through as soon as you open the game.

I dunno if I wanna watch some stupid ad every time I zone. If it's just a loading screen that says "DRINK COKE MOTHERFUCKER" I probably won't care. If it's some animated video I am forced to sit through just to meet some ads per minute quota I would be pretty pissed.
