I'm at a point in my life where I'm not happy with my career... (sales rep, fuck my life...) Anyway I've always loved writing and I'm pretty good at, but it's a pain in the ass to write a book if you don't have exposure and it's impossible to get a script read by anyone credible if you don't have connections which leads me to blogging...

I'm considering starting a blog, but the problem with that is everyone does it these days and the problem always seems to be hits, and consistent traffic... I'm torn about how to write about a topic/multiple topics without spreading myself too thin in order to get traffic. In other words do I just write about sports (for example) in hope that sports fans go to the site, or do I write about anything that I care about at any given time in hopes that i attract a wider fan base?

Ugh, I'm depressed a pissed, any tips in general?

From what I understand the best thing to do is to have a good deal of *interesting* (No one gives a shit if you licked your cat's asshole and listened to death cab while contemplating ending it all) content *BEFORE* you start trying to get hits and/or followers. And beyond that you need to be extremely consistant with updates (i.e. twice a week or something). The reasoning being that if people glance over your site once and there isn't much to read they are gonna lose interest quick and if you don't show an interest in it they aren't gonna stick around. First impressions are hugely important.

You also have to keep at it. It's extremely unlikely that you become an instant success and efamous overnight. If you keep at it and pick up a few followers here and there and if your content is interesting enough your few followers will tell their friends and they will tell their friends and so on and so forth. There are now 5000000000000billionmillionzillion blogs on the internets and only so many people who have the attention span to follow them. So be realistic in your expectations.

Also, imo don't be a cheap fuck. Get your own domain. Pay for hosting. Running an overused software like wordpress is fine but having a MYPENIS.wordpress.com or ilikecocks.gayblogger.net blog makes you look like a noob imo. You can get a domain for like 10-15$ a year and hosting is like 10-15$ a month. 130-195$ a year is not an excessive amount of money for something you plan on pouring your heart and soul into. It's less than an MMO subscription. And even making minimum wage you make your monthly payment in less than 2 hours. *shrug*

I've had my blog for coming up on 3 years in July. I'm just now getting multiple regular readers and it is pretty much because I've found a blogging community and a place where I fit in. Wordpress is almost necessary because so many people already use it and because of that more people will find your shit. I've been regularly having 20+ visits a day at least 3 times a week. I write about every game I play and just tried to be negative and funny. I even use it to discuss how I'm feeling at times when I'm really down. I wanted to become efamous and all that shiz but I'm beginning to settle for just fitting in to an area of the mmo blogosphere. Plus, I've noticed the more I don't care about big traffic, the bigger my traffic gets.

I've tried on several occasions to start a blog but I could never stay motivated to continually write. I wish you good luck though.
