Aion Review

Buds, this is Lineage III. I was practically having flashbacks. The character classes are the same, the advancement and story-line are almost the same, at least at lower level the weapons and spells are the same. In its time I loved the game, but I can't believe people aren't making the obvious connection and seeing this as a flatout Lineage sequel.
Now, that being said, Aion mechanics are infinitely better, the colors are just as gorgeous, but now with many times the detail, it looks like they put a nice crafting game here. I can't tell if Aion will have same god-awful adena shortage that gave legions of Chineese keyboard monkeys gainful employment in Lineage II. But while I'm playing a mage, spells are the same, mana-recharge rate is still limits leveling speed. My main will probably be a Ranger, and, like Lineage 2, you ranger class actually doesn't have to pick up a bow for some time.
It has still the same paper-thin story line. WOW has a tremendous story-line, imho, probably the best storyline of any potential MMPORG this side of Star Trek. For whatever reason I think WOW's quest stories play out better, more us-vs-then. Character detail in Aion is excellent, and yet, I think EVE's is better, maybe because EVE has a background and lighting to work with. Stability and framerate in AION is infinitely better than L2's launch; a couple of rubber bands and one DC in 10 hours. A few locked-in-terrian I took care of by logging back in.
I was disappointed on how similar the two worlds look, at lower levels. I even think the races look pretty much alike, not having humanoid-but-different of, for instance, DAOC, let alone multiracial WOW. The major cities that I saw look like they use the same architect firm as L2's castles; more detail in AION but, high, arching, plain surfaces.
We'll see how this plays out in the American market. I preceive the gaming community as being much more pvp orientated than 4 years ago, let alone 10 or more, and maybe the NA market is ready for this latest version of Lineage.

I have a 13 Asmo Templar on Triniel if anyone else is playing on that server. Was out of town for a week and a half starting the day after release so just starting to play this week.

I was recently considering picking it up, but once again I was dissuaded when I recently heard that pvp is essentially non-existent until lvl 50 and that it takes one hell of an annoying grind to get there since quests are pretty much non-existent/worthless past lvl 30.

My templar is like 36ish now. Only 14 more levels of torture to awesomeness. Then I can start looking for a new game.
