Playing Asteroid Empires alot, I'm pretty good at it. Not a twitch game.

For funz I'm doing the WoW 10-day trial. I can't see spending time on this game, like the first time I tried it, but for the masses, gaming doesn't get any easier. WOW will be up until the North Koreans get us in range and have some quirky spasm and fry us. Blizzard has quite the franchise.

Aion char creation is on par with or better than what you will find in any "western" MMO using that loosely to include things like AoC and AO. You have tons of sliders and things to choose from, though there are some random things like eye color that you can't do for some odd reason. You basically have a handful of "base" faces to choose from, and then you can slide all sorts of shit around to get the facial structure/body style you like. Obv there is a boob slider.
Starting out, the game plays about the same as any newer MMO. There is some guy near by with a quest marker floating over his head when you start out. You are surrounded by stupid mobs. There is enough of a bullshit story as to why you are where you are and a sort of questing path to follow to level. Very exciting. I would say slightly shittier than warhammer online but leaps and bounds better than anything asian.
You play through some shitty story arc to get through the newbie lands (i.e. reach level 10ish) and then you "ascend" and get some of your memories back (i.e. choose your final class). You also gain the ability to fly for a limited duration. I think about 1 minute as a newbie. You can upgrade your wings later I think to extend your time in the air. Anyway... From this point you are a bit more free to move around and have a less set quest arc but still pretty much the same shit as any other new game.
The flying seems pretty limited. You can fly in the first part of the next area you are in and even have some quests built around flying to do. As soon as you try to fly into the next part of that area you pretty much hit an invisible wall. So it's not that neat. You can fly in the PvP areas and unless they have changed it, you can use all of your abilities while flying. Some classes I think also have self buffs that improve flight duration. *shrug*
I have heard the PvP is pretty fun but I don't really think it has much of a purpose and it's limited to certain PvP zones (the Abyss?!). So I dunno. I lost interest in wasting time on a non-permanent char about level 14. So I dunno.
Overall I would say the game is as fun as maybe warhammer online. I don't think Aion will have any impact on WoW as WoW is pretty much superior in every way excepting graphics. Of course every time I pick up WoW I am reminded of how much shittier every other game is by comparisson. It makes me sad.
Oh and graphics. Aion runs AMAZING. Seriously. The game is really pretty. And it runs as good as WoW while looking better I would say. I do not know if this remains true in large scale fighting though. So maybe with 80 people on the screen it will go all warhammer and crater. *shrug*
Sooooo... I'll prolly play it at release. But I am not super pumped about it. It's just something new if not really something different. La de da.

But I don't know about gameplay. I've no desire to grind, at all, Lineage II kicked it all out of me. Might have killed me for online games, lol.
But NCSoft knows how to make a pretty game.

I dunno, the character classes are straight out of L2. Not that they weren't bad ideas, for their time I think L2's character classes were brilliant, but we are, what, 6 years down the road? And the PvP, from a distance, looks like L2's as well, very much guild-based. Asian MMPORG pvp seems so unlike the lone mad-man, like Og's in AC, (to take you way way back). NCSoft just isn't going to get someone coming right out of the newbie spawn ko'ing everyone left right and center, they just don't do it.
Will buy. I'm bored.

I don't really remember the L2 character classes, the classes in AION are your standard MMO fare. Clerics heal, Chanters heal shittier but have a few more buffs and can take a bit more damage, Templars tank, Gladiators do more damage and can half assed tank in a pinch, Assassins are standard mmo style rogues rogues, Rangers can shoot shit with a bow for decent damage, Spiritmasters are a pet class, Sorcs nuke shit... Nothing really out of the ordinary or unique that I saw. You can use abilities while flying so I guess that's a nifty mechanic that I think only shadowbane really had... I haven't played it enough to notice anything really amazing and I think you can tweak things a little with the percs/talents/feats/whatever the fuck they are called.

Sad, because we master a game we get stuck in the it for years. Like listening to classic rock, it means your brain cells are dieing.
